Fossilized Bones

Today we made fossils.

Dinosaur fossils were formed by bones becoming per-mineralized. All the little gaps in the bone formations were filled with minerals.

On to seeing for ourselves how that works.

All that's needed is sand, salt, water, and a spounge.

Fill a bowl part way with sand.

Cut out your bone shapes and place them on your bed of sand.

Mix 100 ml of salt and 250 ml of warm water.

Cover up your bones with sand..

Pour your saltwater over your covered bones.
Set your bowl in a sunny window for a few days.
We'll show you the results when they're done!

  1. We'll have to do this one, as Damek has always been fascinated with how fossils are formed.
