Sugar Shack

These little houses make cheerful and bright winter and Valentine decorations.

You'll need a batch of Royal Icing; something to build your house upon - cardstock, parchment paper and cardboard, etc; sugarcubes; various candies; and something for the roof-- we used crackers for one, and cardstock cut into a cone shape for the others (much easier!).

If you'd like a cone roof, cut out a circle according to your circumference and pitch (steep) preference for your roof.

Royal Icing Recipe

3 T meringue powder

6 T warm water

4 cups of powdered sugar

Put the ingredients in your mixer on low (I used 2) for about seven minutes, til it peaks well.
OR 10-12 minutes on high speed with a hand-held mixer.

Hint: We made a second batch, and have leftovers, but the first batch wasn't enough. I'd say this recipe will make two houses, and half again the original recipe for three houses of this size.

  1. That is a very creative idea. And the houses look so cute. We will have to give that a try.

  2. Sara - I didn't come up with it by myself!
We actually made these... last year? the year before?... yes! two years ago at Art and Craft Circle (a local homeschool art group that we have with friends).
Maddie was an infant, so yeah. :)

They were featured in Martha's mag, too, I believe.

The paper roof form was mine, though, out of necessity!

  3. I just saw this on Crafty Crow. Love the idea!! We'll be trying this out but could I use regular icing of something else that I don't have to make?
